Ines Forte is a Specialist Periodontist at Hospital Lane Dental and Implant Centre.
My name is Ines.
I'm a specialist in periodontics, so I'm a specialist in gum disease.
Gum disease or periodontitis can affect teeth and implants.
These days affect implants, so patients are referred to me to treat teeth and implants.
But it's a systemic disease that will affect the supporting tissues around our teeth and implants.
So patients are referred and what I do on a first appointment is a thorough examination.
I'll do x-rays, assess everything and come with a diagnosis and treatment plan.
So treatment of periodontitis or peri-implantitis around implants always starts with non-surgical treatment.
Periodontitis is unfortunately a bit of a silent disease.
After making a treatment plan, the treatment starts with deep cleaning, so deep cleaning under the gum, and we always numb the patient, so the patient is not going to feel anything during that initial phase of treatment or any treatment that we do.
And we always review after two to three months and assess how the results work.
So usually, gum disease or periodontitis, peri-implantitis around implants progresses silently, so the patient will not be able to know that something is happening.
As the disease progress, basically you're going to lose the tissues that support teeth and implants, and the end point of the disease is you losing your teeth and implants, but also because it's a systemic disease, it has a negative impact on the rest of our body.
So actually treating gum disease will help prevent problems like heart disease, heart problems, and you will have a good impact, for example, on stabilizing diabetes if the patient has diabetes.
One of the reasons I'm in this practice and I love working in this practice is how I can work with my colleagues here as well.
So mainly I treat gum disease around teeth and implants, but we're kind of a multidisciplinary team.
