Sotiris Nicholas, Consultant Anaesthetist at Bryer Wallace
Hi, I'm Sotiris Nicholas.
I'm a consultant Anaesthetist here at Bryer Wallace and I am fully trained anaesthetic consultant and I sit up and deliver the sedation service here at Bryer Wallace as I've always actually had an interest in helping particularly anxious people.
And it's quite, it's common knowledge really that people are quite anxious when it comes to having dental procedures performed on them.
The idea of sedation is essentially to take the edge off of everything and essentially it makes you relax.
It just allows you to just kind of completely and not worry about what's going on around you whilst keeping you with the ability to be aware of your senses and your ability to communicate with us.
It's important that we select the appropriate patients for sedation and most commonly, and this is people have sedation because they're particularly anxious or they're having complex dental procedures that might also be prolonged.
On the day of the procedure, you'll come in and you'll have a conversation with your dentist to go through the consent form process with them and then have a preoperative assessment with me where I go through your medical history, your medication allergies, and then you kind of previous past experiences or concerns that you may have.
And I'll explain in greater detail, just adding to the information that we send you beforehand about what sedation is, how it works and the actual process itself.
What we've set up here.
And I suppose what is quite unique to us here at Bryer Wallace is that we have gone above and beyond in terms of the safety measures, monitoring and equipment that we use here compared to, I would say, most places in the rest of the country, which you want your family and your friends to come and have treatment in, in a place like this.
And 100% yes.
Dr Sotiris Nicholas, consultant anaesthetist at Bryer Wallace Belgravia
Having a consultant anaesthetist on-site is just one of many factors that makes Bryer Wallace Belgravia unique, and Sotiris’ sedation facility is yet another way in which Bryer Wallace Belgravia goes above and beyond for our community of patients. As Sotiris explains:
“I wanted to set up a bespoke and safe sedation service, allowing patients of all backgrounds to come to us to have procedures performed comfortably. Pretty much in all circumstances, patients are actually smiling and laughing at the end of their treatment!”
There are a number of reasons why a patient may wish to undergo sedation at our practice. While it’s commonly applied to patients with anxiety or dental phobia, many patients in need of complex or prolonged procedures, or who have particular medical conditions which cause them to shake, may also be suitable candidates for sedation.
No matter the reason for providing dental sedation, Sotiris and the team at Bryer Wallace Belgravia ensure the utmost in exceptional care and attention to detail.
“Before each procedure, the patients will submit their medical history so we can ensure they’re healthy and safe and appropriate for sedation. On the day, patients will go through every detail and any concerns with their dentist and anaesthetist, who will explain in great detail what sedation is, how it works and what to expect.
We’ll then bring you into the dental surgery and make you comfortable. Lots of different monitoring methods will be applied to keep everything safe before a small drip is administered with different medicines to get you into a nice relaxing point - we want you to be thoroughly relaxed before we start any treatment.
What is unique at Bryer Wallace is that we have gone above and beyond in terms of monitoring and safety measures. We conform to all national guidelines and recommendations in terms of sedation, and we provide additional techniques and safety measures to make sure that the patient is safe and feels comfortable.
We use nasal capnography to monitor a patient’s carbon dioxide levels as an additional safety measure, and continuously monitor heart rate and oxygen saturation with intermittent non-invasive blood pressure monitoring. At Bryer Wallace, a dedicated Consultant Anaesthetist delivers sedation. We use dedicated Target Controlled Infusion (TCI), not all dental practices do this.
The result is that our patients come out incredibly happy and grateful. It’s quite amazing; people who had considered cancelling their appointments due to being scared end up coming back again and again. To be able to relax these patients and see them come out happy, smiling and high-fiving you - that is an incredibly satisfying aspect of the job.”
Bryer Wallace’s commitment to excellence in dental care involves treating every patient as an individual, and ensuring every treatment plan is meticulously tailored to the patient’s precise needs and requirements. Just as we deliver bespoke root canal treatments and complex oral surgeries, no single sedation is the same, and different patients call for different approaches to ensure the best results.
This dedication to detail and to excel in all areas is central to what Bryer Wallace Belgravia does best. According to Sotiris:
“I wanted to set up a high end bespoke safe service; one where I would be proud and happy for my own relatives to have treatment and sedation.
That’s really the way I like to think about Bryer Wallace Belgravia - would I want my close family and friends to have treatment in a place like this? For me, the answer is 100% yes.”
