Dental Excellence Harewood
MFGDP (UK) Dip D Sedation (Univ N’Cle) Psychotherapist
Previously a dentist, Howard is now a psychotherapist and specialises in phobias and anxiety states. He works with patients with extreme dental phobia and accepts referrals for this patient group. He has a non-clinical consulting room at Harewood and can offer dental sedation, where appropriate, in association with Donald who carries out all aspects of restorative treatment if required.
Howard’s main approaches to his work are behavioural methods such as desensitisation, hypnotherapy, cognitive behavioural therapy, or in more complex cases, psycho-dynamic methods which explore past events and their effect on current issues.
Qualifying and working as a dentist fuelled Howard’s interest in treating anxious dental patients, particularly those with phobias. He went on to undertake training in psychological approaches, initially in behavioural techniques before hypnotherapy. Howard lectured on advanced hypnotic techniques and became National Secretary and hon fellow of the British Society of Medical and Dental Hypnosis. He was attached to the department of psychiatry for three years to study every area of psychology and treat every type of psychological problem.
Howard qualified with a diploma in psychotherapy from the University of Leeds and held positions at St James’ University Hospital, Leeds, treating medically compromised patients, atypical facial pain, temporomandibular joint and muscle disorders and phobias, and at Leeds Dental Institute, teaching clinical skills, patient management and running courses on managing stress for practicing dentists. Howard obtained additional qualifications in dental sedation at Newcastle University, and was awarded membership of the Faculty of General Dental Practice at the Royal College of Surgeons of England.
Howard has also previously achieved National Winner of the Probe Dental Awards for services to dental phobia.
