Training and qualifications

Bernadette Shipley qualified BDS from Liverpool University in 1985. She started her career with hospital posts in Liverpool and Birmingham universities and joined the Community Dental Service in 1987 to pursue her interest in treating children and people with dental anxiety. In response to the complex treatment needs of her patients, and to the number of children seen with untreated trauma, she decided to undertake an MSc in Restorative Dentistry with an emphasis on endodontics.

Following this, she was asked to accept honorary posts in both paediatrics and periodontology at Liverpool University. This involved clinical supervision, training and treatment. She was also a vocational trainer whilst working for North Mersey Trust.

She worked in general practice for twenty years, as well as providing services for people with special needs including dental phobia, referred to the Community Dental Service. As part of the latter role, she participates in the provision of training in endodontics and conscious sedation as well as supporting the newly qualified registrants in their first year.
