Training and experience

Joana Matos is a highly skilled dentist with a passion for cosmetic and aesthetic restorative dentistry. Originally from Porto, Portugal, she graduated with distinction from the University Fernando Pessoa in 2014. Shortly after her graduation, Joana relocated to the United Kingdom, where she has been practising dentistry ever since.

Having completed two advanced dental seminars in cosmetic and aesthetic restorative dentistry, Joana has gained invaluable insights and techniques in her field. The seminars, namely "Cosmetic Dentistry and Aesthetic Restorative Dentistry" and "Advanced Occlusion and Treatment Planning - Mastering Comprehensive Dentistry," have equipped her with knowledge of the latest advancements and best practices in cosmetic and aesthetic restorative dentistry.

Furthermore, Joana is currently pursuing a postgraduate Certificate in Endodontology through Simplyendo, an approved academic partner of the University of Chester. This specialised training enhances her ability to diagnose and treat endodontic cases effectively ensuring optimal dental health for her patients.

After qualifying, Smitha pursued a master’s in public health research at the University of Edinburgh and while she continues to work as a research consultant for King’s College London and the University of Edinburgh, dentistry is her primary passion.

Smitha joined the Practice in 2016 and prior to qualifying as a dentist in the UK, worked in a busy mixed practice in Bangalore India. Smitha has experience in treating anxious patients.

No, orthodontics for adults is becoming more and more common. We can talk through your options with you.

We do understand that some people really struggle with dental treatment. But we have lots of ways to help put you at ease. Please just tell us how you feel and what worries you, and then we can work together to decide on the right approach.

Generally we recommend twice yearly check-ups every six months. However, this varies on a case by case basis. Your Bupa Dental Care dentist will talk to you about when and how often we need to see you.

Fillings repair small holes in your tooth enamel. If they aren’t filled, the decay will deepen. You’ll start to feel pain, and you could end up needing root canal treatment, which is much more significant and costs more. So although you might not feel pain right now, it’s best to repair these holes as soon as possible.
