Facial Aesthetic Treatments FAQs

Botulinum toxin

Botulinum toxin injections can reduce some types of wrinkles.

These injections are commonly used to treat forehead and frown lines that naturally happen over time from making facial expressions. They can also reduce lines at the corners of your eyes, known as crow’s feet.

Botulinum toxin can only reduce ‘active wrinkles’ which are caused by muscle activity. It won’t work for wrinkles, creases or lines that don’t change with your facial expressions.

How does botulinum toxin work?

If you have treatment, your clinician will inject small amounts of botulinum toxin into specific muscles in your face. It relaxes these muscles to prevent them from contracting, which reduces lines and wrinkles. The effects will start to show within a few days, although it may take one to two weeks for the full effects to be noticeable.

The results should last for three to four months. You’ll need to have the treatment repeated if you want to keep the effects.

Dermal fillers

Dermal fillers boost your skin’s supply of hyaluronic acid. This is a natural substance produced in your body, which can decrease as you age. Fillers work as a top-up to enhance your natural features, by reducing the appearance of lines and wrinkles and smoothing your skin.

They’re often used to:

  • Reduce lines around your nose and your lips
  • Contour your face
  • Enhance the shape of your lips

Dermal fillers can help you achieve a subtle look without affecting your facial expressions. Your clinician will discuss which non-permanent dermal filler might be right for you during your initial consultation.

How do dermal fillers work?

Depending on the look that you’re aiming to achieve, your clinician will inject the dermal filler into the required area with a tiny needle.

The effects of dermal filler treatment usually last between three and 12 months depending on the type of filler and the area you have treated. You’ll need to have repeat treatments if you want the effects to last longer.

Having facial aesthetic treatments to enhance your appearance is best carried out in a clinical setting by qualified practitioners.

At Bupa Dental Care, patient safety is at the heart of everything we do and our skilled clinicians have an in-depth knowledge of facial anatomy. They’ll take the time to listen to your concerns and understand what you want to achieve. Then they’ll use their expert knowledge to discuss suitable treatment options for you.

All treatments are carried out in our comfortable, welcoming practices which offer a discreet, safe and controlled clinical setting.

Anti-wrinkle treatments, also known as facial aesthetics, are minor non-surgical, non-permanent treatments that can subtly enhance your appearance. These treatments can make your skin appear plumper and fuller, and so reduce the appearance of lines and wrinkles, and address the loss of volume in some areas of the face.

At Bupa Dental Care, our clinicians will take the time to fully understand the look you’d like to achieve through treatment. Whether you want to enhance certain features, or just have a more refreshed look, they can discuss with you the various options to enable you to get the results you want. They may suggest a range of options including using one or a combination of the following cosmetic treatments:

  • Botulinum toxin: which is commonly used to treat your face from the bridge of the nose up
  • Dermal fillers: which are commonly used to treat below the bridge of the nose

We understand that people may be concerned about looking unnatural or ‘frozen’ after having cosmetic treatments. Our professional clinicians are experienced in offering tailored treatments and are here to listen and understand what you want to achieve.

From your very first consultation, to treatment and aftercare, they’re here to help you achieve subtle results on the outside, which can result in a significant confidence boost.

This will vary depending on the patient and the type of treatment, but for dermal and lip fillers, the results can be immediate. For other treatments, the full effects can usually be seen one to two weeks post-treatment.

A very fine needle is used for these treatments and your clinician is skilled at administering injections. Most patients experience little discomfort during treatment, and, in some cases, anaesthetic can be used.

Facial aesthetics consultations and treatments are not offered to anyone under the age of 18. Some anti-wrinkle treatments aren’t suitable if you’re pregnant, breastfeeding or have a neurological condition (such as myasthenia gravis) or a bleeding disorder. As part of your consultation your clinician will take a full medical history from you, and advise you on your suitability, before starting any procedures.

As with any procedure performed on the body, there can be some side effects with anti-wrinkle treatments, including:

  • Mild bruising and swelling around the site of the injection
  • Mild headaches shortly after treatment (these usually subside within 24 hours)

However, these side effects are often mild and short-lived. All of our clinicians are clinically trained in case of any adverse reactions. Before any treatment is undertaken, your clinician will discuss the risks and benefits of the procedure and you'll be given clear aftercare instructions following your treatment.

Your clinician will discuss treatment options during your initial consultation. They’ll also give you a clear and transparent outline of the costs involved in your bespoke treatment plan before you agree to start treatment.
