Patrick specialises in temporomandibular joint disorders (also called TMJ or TMD). These disorders can cause pain in the joint of the jaw, as well as the muscles which control the movement of the jaw.
His interest in the treatment of cranio-facial pain and jaw joint dysfunction was stimulated by his late father, Dr W Grossmann, Consultant Orthodontist at University College Hospital, and Professor James Moss. For more than 25 years, he has had a very close working relationship with Dr Brendan Stack, DDS, in Washington DC, who co-founded the American Academy of Craniofacial Pain and is widely regarded as one of the foremost practitioners in the field.
Patrick himself co-founded the British Society for the Study of Craniomandibular Disorders (BSSCMD) in 1992. This group includes dentists, orthodontists, osteopaths, chiropractors and other healthcare practitioners. The BSSCMD hosts regular meetings with international speakers with the view of bringing an understanding of the complexity of craniomandibular dysfunction (CMD) to all healthcare professionals. CMD is multi-faceted and overlaps with numerous disciplines – not just dental but also medical and surgical.
He qualified from University College Hospital Dental School, London University, in 1974 and went on to achieve his Diploma of Orthodontics in 1978. In that year, he was awarded a scholarship to continue his studies at the University of Freiburg in Breisgau, Germany. For several years he was solely responsible for translating scientific articles from German into English for the highly respected German orthodontics journal Fortschritte der Kieferorthopaedie. In addition, he has translated Dr Hugo Stockfisch's substantial textbook on orthodontics and dentofacial orthopaedics, The Principles and Practice of Dentofacial Orthopaedics, which has sold worldwide.
In 1980, Patrick entered private practice and took up an appointment as Senior Dental Officer in Orthodontics for the South London Area Health Authority, a position he held for 15 years. At this time he was also employed by the Middlesex Hospital, London, in their combined orthodontic/maxillo-facial clinic.
