What are clear aligners?
Made from thin, transparent plastic, clear aligners are virtually-invisible and look similar to mouth guards and retainers.
The aligners are moulded to the shape of your teeth for a precise and comfortable fit. They need to be worn for 20-22 hours a day to be effective, so they can be removed for brushing, eating and drinking.
What are the benefits of clear, removable aligners?
- Clear aligners can correct a variety of concerns, including minor crowding, gaps between teeth and in some cases, bite concerns (overjet and overbite issues)
- Aligners can straighten your smile without others noticing, so they’re ideal if you’re looking for a discreet option
- They're removable, so you can take them out for brushing, eating and drinking. This means you don’t need to avoid foods which could damage your brace, and it’s easy to reach all areas of your teeth when brushing
- Custom-made from thin, flexible plastic, the aligners fit comfortably over your teeth
What are the different types of clear aligners?
A range of clear aligners are available, depending on your clinical needs and your dentist’s or orthodontist’s recommendations. One option is the Invisalign system.

How do near-invisible aligners work?
During your treatment, you’ll wear a series of aligners which gradually straighten your teeth. They need to be worn for 20-22 hours a day and you'll change your aligner every week or so.
You may need temporary attachments added to your teeth, also known as engagers. These are tiny tooth-coloured bumps used to ensure your aligners are creating pressure on the right area of your tooth.
How much do clear aligners cost?
The cost of clear aligners depends on the type of aligners you have and the severity of your case.
Following your consultation, the dentist or orthodontist will go through your bespoke treatment plan, outlining all costs involved.
Some payment options are available at some Bupa practices. Contact your nearest practice for more information.
