Our COVID-19 safety tariff
Our clinicians have always worn personal protective equipment (PPE) to treat you, but since the COVID-19 outbreak, the demand for PPE has increased costs dramatically. In addition, the Government has advised that enhanced PPE must be worn.
Unfortunately, we’ve had to introduce a safety tariff that will be applied to each private appointment, adjusted to the level of PPE required for your treatment.
We have introduced a separate tariff (as opposed to rolling out a blanket price rise across all treatments), so you can clearly see how much the enhanced PPE costs.
This is a temporary measure. We are committed to keeping costs to a minimum and hope to reduce this further as the cost for PPE reduces, or the need for enhanced safety measures decreases or are no longer needed.

So, we’ve put together some helpful advice, including managing dental pain at-home, and maintaining a healthy and happy smile during the coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic.
We’re delighted that all our practices are now open for face-to-face care, although in accordance with Government guidelines, we are providing different levels of care across the UK.
We expect that there will be many patients who will want to come back and see us right away, so we will prioritise appointments based on patient need. Please visit your local practice page for the status of your practice and to get in touch.
Maintaining our new safety measures also means we won’t be able to see as many patients each day. We’ll be managing our diaries as best we can and contacting patients as soon as possible, but please be aware that it might take us a little longer to schedule your appointment. If you have any concerns or are eager to speak to us, please contact your local practice.
We kindly ask that you do not visit your local practice in-person without a pre-arranged appointment.
We’re delighted that most of our practices across the UK are now open again or are opening very soon for different levels of face-to-face care. You may be wondering why the levels of care vary across the UK… Dentistry is regulated differently across England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland, which means the advice from the Government and regulatory bodies can differ in each region. Currently, the levels of face-to-face care available are:
- England: All our practices in England are now open for face-to-face care. We expect that there will be many patients eager to come back and see us right away, so we will prioritise appointments based on patient need.
- Scotland: We have opened most of our practices in Scotland for limited face-to-face care and expect to provide more services in July. Please understand that initially, we’ll be prioritising emergencies and patients with the greatest need.
- Wales: Our practices in Wales are now open to see patients for face-to-face care. We expect that there will be many patients eager to book appointments and see us right away, so we will prioritise appointments based on patient need.
- Northern Ireland: Our practices in Northern Ireland are now open to see patients for limited face-to-face care. Please understand that, initially, we’ll be prioritising emergencies and patients with the greatest need. We expect to resume full face-to-face services sometime in July.

Most of our practices in England are open and are taking appointment bookings. In other regions where we’re providing urgent or limited care, we can book patients in for emergency appointments and some other limited services. Please get in touch with your local practice if you’d like to make an appointment.

Many of our practices are accepting new private patients. Please contact your local practice to enquire about availability.
We understand it’s a difficult time for patients who have been unable to attend follow-up appointments for their ongoing, routine dental treatment.
In England and Wales, our dental practices are now open again. Our practices will be calling patients to re-book appointments, but you can of course reach out to your local practice if you prefer. We expect there will be many patients who will want to come back and see us right away, so we will prioritise appointments based on patient need. Please bear with us if we can’t book you in as quickly as we normally would.
If your practice is in Scotland or Northern Ireland, we can provide limited care, and will be prioritising emergency appointments and those with the greatest need initially. We expect to provide more services sometime in July.

We completely understand you may be more nervous about visiting the dentist than normal.
The truth is, your visit will be different. There will be more safety measures in place and consequently, our practices may feel more ‘clinical’. Our dentists, hygienists and nurses will be wearing more safety clothing and face wear, and our reception teams will be behind screens and wearing masks too. We’ll also ask you to use hand sanitiser and wear a face mask while in practice (these will be provided), but it’s only for everyone’s protection. Of course in reality, underneath the protective equipment, it’s still the same practice team providing your dental care.

If your child is visiting the dentist, you may want to have a chat with them beforehand to explain that things might be a little different than last time they visited. But explain that there’s absolutely nothing to worry about. You could run through some of the simple steps to follow when visiting the practice to help them to understand what’s going to happen.
Most appointments last between 15-30 minutes. Please let the practice know if you’re particularly anxious, and they will do their best to look after you once you arrive.
When you make an appointment, please let the team know you fall into the ‘vulnerable people’ category and what, if any, extra assistance you need when you visit.

If you’d rather not visit us in practice, many of our practices are still providing telephone support and advice, so give us a call and one of our dentists will do their best to help you.
If the dentist offers you a prescription over the phone, this will be sent to your local pharmacy, and another person can collect this on your behalf.
If you have a dental emergency, please call your local practice to speak to a dentist. We may prescribe medication, or if needed, book you in to see a dentist for treatment. If you’re not currently a patient at a Bupa Dental Care practice you can still call us.
Appointments MUST be made in advance. Please do not arrive at a practice without a prior appointment.
Patients should visit A&E if they have jaw swelling that is causing difficulty in breathing or swallowing, uncontrolled bleeding or facial trauma.

You’ll also find a section on severe emergency symptoms, which would require you to go straight to A&E. Please note, you should only call 111 or visit A&E if you have one of the symptoms listed in this section.
Urgent Dental Care sites were set up to treat patients with a dental emergency offering a broader range of services whilst other practices were closed to offer NHS dental care to both NHS and private patients. Our practices across the UK are now open or opening very soon for varying levels of face-to-face care, so you should be able to be seen at your usual dental practice instead of at an Urgent Dental Centre. Dental payment schemes (such as Denplan or Practice Plan) allow you to spread the cost of certain treatments by paying a set amount each month. It’s important to keep paying, so your dental benefits aren’t impacted. Many practices are now open again, so please contact your local practice and we will book you in if we can.
If you have any further questions regarding your payments, please contact the plan provider directly. If your plan is provided by your employer, you should speak to your workplace directly.
If you are mid treatment and are worried about a change in your financial situation due to COVID-19, contact your credit provider and ask them to explain your options.
We'd like to advise patients that many images and videos used throughout our website were taken and produced before the COVID-19 outbreak. Therefore social distancing rules and extra levels of PPE are not displayed.
