Maria's implant story
Watch Maria’s story | Watch in 5:13 minutes
After having implant treatment outside of the UK, Maria was left with failing, exposed and infected implants, some of which were penetrating into her nose and sinus. She was in agony.
Watch Maria’s story to find out how Specialist Prosthodontist Akit Patel restored Maria's smile, giving her teeth she could rely on again for a pain-free life with restored confidence.
Unfortunately, Foria, the implant treatment that she had abroad has been both harmful and damaging, and this damage is permanent. So, you know, we can't often resolve or recover these issues, and patients are often left with a worse situation now than they first started with.
Well, I don't really know the reason why I had to have implants in the first place. I was suffering with a toothache top, and I went to see this dentist, and then before I knew it, he took them all out at the top, and he said to me I needed implants. About, well, I must have been very, very little at the time, I had an accident on a bike and my bottom teeth was all jagged, so he said he won't take them out, you'll just put something over them so it hide all the jagged bits.
Well, then when we come back from Spain, we had to go and find a dentist so I could say, look, could you help me? So we found this guy, and he said to me there's nothing he could do for me, he doesn't do that sort of treatment now, but then he said to me I've got a guy you will like, and that was AA. I phoned up, made an appointment with him, and I think within, I think it was a week, I come to see him, and when he looked in my mouth, he went, oh my God.
So when I saw Maria, there was lots of things going wrong. She had 13 implants in total, so she had eight in the upper jaw, five in the lower jaw. The upper jaw, she had a full clearance, so there were no natural teeth, so these eight implants were supporting a single full arch bridge. However, these implants were failing, they were exposed, so all the left implants were, all the threads were exposed in the mouth. There was pus straining from the implants, there was infection, inflammation, swelling. Some of the implants were penetrating the nose and the sinus. In the lower jaw, she had five implants, one of them was failing, and her front teeth were all crowned, and she had undergone elective root canal treatment prior to the crowns, which were linked, and they had poor shapes, fit, color, they were bulky. You know, there was generally no access for cleaning in her mouth, and her bite was very unstable.
I went through agony, I went through pain, I went through loads of operations. I was in the chair for 4 hours getting all these things out. I was in the chair for another 5 hours getting the rest of them out. I couldn't smile because the teeth was hanging. So when I seen AK, AK said I can do you a... I was, I said I don't want false teeth, I don't want false teeth, and he said well, Marie, he said it's either that or you have the implants, and I said I don't want the implants, I'll have my... I said I have that. I didn't like to call it denture, I said I love that thing, and it goes okay, Maria, we're going to do that.
So for Maria, luckily, the temporary denture was successful, and we did give an option of having a second course of implant treatment with major reconstruction. However, understandably, she didn't want to go through the emotional stress again and the financial kind of burden, so she was happy to opt for basically a complete upper plastic denture, okay. And in the lower jaw, as I said, we were able to save virtually everything, so we swapped the restorations for a final set of crowns.
When that get finished with me, he really, really changed my life. I did say I was singing, but my life has changed one hundred percent because I can go out with confidence with the children, my friends, we can go out and have a good old chat and have a good meal together because I can eat, before I couldn't. It changed my life one hundred percent. I can't say any more than that. If you want things done properly, stay in the UK, that's my advice to anybody.
Is implant treatment actually cheaper abroad?
It’s common for dental practices abroad to advertise implants for cheaper than the UK average, which is around £2,4151. The price difference can be due to a number of factors like lower wage and overhead costs, less-expensive premises and cheaper insurance costs.
- Return flights (of which there might be several)
- Taking time off work, including a loss of earnings from extra time off if needed
- Hotel accommodation, which could be up to three weeks for complex treatment
- Food and other living costs while you’re abroad
- Airport parking charges
- Fuel or train fares to and from UK airports
- Taxi fares or hire car costs
Spread the cost of your dental implants
Patient finance is available for treatments that cost between £250 and £50,000 at 0% APR** when you choose a repayment term of between 3 months and 36 months (subject to the amount of credit), this means that you can spread your treatment cost over a term that suits you, and you don’t pay back any more than you would pay otherwise.
Once you have agreed your treatment plan with your dentist, you’ll have the option to apply.

Risks of having dental treatment abroad
The biggest risk of having an implant abroad is what happens if something goes wrong. It’s important you’re fully informed of all the potential risks before you commit to any treatment.
Regulation
Dental treatment isn’t regulated in the same way in every country. In the UK, dentistry is regulated by the General Dental Council (GDC). Dental professionals working in the UK have to be registered with the GDC and hold appropriate indemnity insurance. If something goes wrong, you’re able to easily raise a complaint, which the GDC can investigate if needed. The GDC has no power to investigate any dental work completed outside the UK. If the treatment you receive abroad goes wrong, it can be difficult to recover the money.
Regulation varies depending on the country you visit, so it’s important to do thorough research on how dentistry is regulated in the country you’re planning to visit if you’re considering treatment abroad.
Complications following treatment
There have been many reports and stories about patients who have had complications following treatment which have led to serious oral health problems, or worse. Unfortunately, accessing follow-up treatment at home can be difficult if there’s a complication, as it’s hard for dentists to rectify implants that were placed in another country.
If you’re considering going abroad, you should always do lots of research around the practice you’re going to, your dentist’s qualifications and what kind of guarantee they offer.
Medical history and consultations
If you’re going abroad, your dentist won’t know your dental history and you may not be able to have a thorough consultation with your dentist abroad before starting treatment, which can cause serious problems.
You should speak to your dentist before you commit to any treatment. They can offer advice based on your specific dental history and talk you through the risks in detail.
If you are set on having implants placed abroad, you should request a copy of your dental records to send to your dentist overseas, as well as a copy of your implant records to give to your regular UK dentist.

- Who will be doing my procedure and what qualifications do they have? Is there somewhere I can check their qualifications?
- Does the surgical team speak English? If not, is a translator provided?
- Can I see references from previous UK patients?
- How many times have you carried out the procedure?
- How often do your patients experience complications and infection?
