If you have a missing tooth, you’re not alone. In fact, over half of the population have at least one tooth missing1. We know that having missing teeth can really knock your confidence, as well as affect the way you eat and speak. Replacing missing teeth can really help you to get your confidence back.
54%1 of people have at least one missing tooth

Below we give an overview of the three main methods for replacing missing teeth. Our dentists here at Bupa Dental Care offer all these options, and can help you decide what’s right for you.
Dental implants
Dental implants are a long-term way of fitting false teeth. As the most modern method for tooth replacement, they’re durable and discreet, and offer a more permanent solution to dentures (removeable false teeth). The implant, which holds your false tooth or teeth in place, is fitted directly into your jawbone, so it’s something you need to think about carefully. Implants may last as long as natural teeth, as long as you take good care of it. Implants tend to cost more than other options for replacing teeth, due to the complex nature of the procedure, but you may decide it’s worth the extra cost for the knowledge that they will last for longer.

Dentures
Dentures are removable plastic or metal frameworks that carry false teeth. They’re a trusted and effective method for replacing missing teeth. Dentures can be used to replace a single tooth, multiple teeth or a full arch of teeth. You tend to wear them during the day and take them out overnight. Your dentures will be customised to fit you. They can take a bit of getting used to at first – and they won’t feel quite the same as your natural teeth. But they should help you to eat, speak and smile with confidence.

Bridges
A dental bridge consists of a replacement tooth or teeth, usually with crowns on either end, which are anchored to your existing teeth on either side of the gap. Your dentist will cement the bridge in place so that you don’t have to remove it. Your dentist or hygienist will teach you how to keep your bridge and natural teeth healthy. Having a bridge can be a less complicated procedure than having an implant, which can be preferable for some people.

Don’t forget, different methods for replacing missing teeth suit different people. It can depend on the number of teeth you have missing, which teeth are missing and the condition of your remaining teeth and gums. If you have a missing tooth and would like to talk to us about your options, we’re happy to help. Find your nearest Bupa Dental Care practice and get in touch to book your initial consultation.
