A carer from Elm View Bupa Care Home has shaved off her long locks this month to raise money for St Peter’s Hospice in Bristol.

Residents and staff at Elm View became hairdressers for the day as they gave Mandy Hart, Senior Carer, a new style, all in aid of charity and helping to fund the vital care and support the local hospice delivers daily.

Mandy set an initial fundraising target of £200, but thanks to the kind donations made by friends, family, residents, colleagues and neighbours from the local community, she raised a total of £831.12 for the worthy cause. This will be matched by Bupa to donate more than £1,600 to the hospice.

St Peter’s Hospice is Bristol’s only adult hospice caring for local people with life limiting illnesses. Mandy chose to complete the sponsored challenge for St Peter’s Hospice as a way of giving something back and saying thank you for the invaluable support it’s given to Elm View residents over the years. The care staff at the hospice have also been incredibly generous over the years, offering their advice and expertise to the care home nursing staff.

Commenting on her recent fundraising efforts, Mandy said: “With so many charities struggling to raise funds during these difficult times, I felt this bold and brave gesture would not only raise awareness of the fantastic work St. Peter’s Hospice does, but also help raise funds to support its vital work.

“I want to thank everyone who supported me through this challenge and donated to make it all worth it, I’m thrilled to have tripled the target.”

Mandy is a veteran carer, with fifteen years’ experience working with the elderly, fourteen of which have been spent with Bupa. She is an Engagement Champion at Elm View and turned the fundraising challenge into a fun day for the residents to get involved in too. Residents supported by watching, helping with the chop, cheering and laughing along to encourage her to succeed.

Heather Squires, Home Manager at Elm View Bupa Care Home, adds: “We pride ourselves in delivering the best care possible to our residents, but it’s essential to have hospices like St Peter’s nearby to deliver specialist care to those who need it.

“We’re so proud of the fantastic efforts Mandy has gone to in raising money for St Peter’s. She’s always had beautiful long hair and we’re in awe of her for making the brave decision to chop it off for charity.”
