How do Bupa Blua Health referrals work?

Bupa Blua Health clinicians can provide private specialist, diagnostic, and pathology referrals. Call us once you have your referral and we can discuss your options and explain which specialists and healthcare professionals are covered by your Bupa membership.

We’ll let you know what you need to do next and send you any pre-treatment forms you may need to complete.

What you need before you contact us:

  • Your Bupa membership number.
  • Details of when your symptoms first began.
  • Details of when you first consulted the clinician about your symptoms.
  • The symptoms you’re suffering from.
  • Details of the treatment and the type of specialist the clinician has recommended.

Call us on 0345 609 0111 or fill in our form to request a callback

Getting your referral letter

After your appointment, we'll email you a link to your referral letter. You'll usually receive this within an hour, but it can take longer.

In the email, tap or click on View referral and you’ll be taken to the login screen of the Bupa Blua Health app.

  • Go to the Care tab.
  • Find your appointment, then tap Referral.
  • Tap on the referral letter you want to open.
  • Click Download Referral Letter.

After your referral appointment

The private healthcare provider you choose will send you the results of your exam or test.

We ask that private healthcare providers send test results back to your NHS GP. Your private healthcare provider should contact you directly to discuss your results and arrange any necessary follow up. You can also discuss any results/concerns with your NHS GP.

You can still make an appointment with a Bupa Blua Health clinician but we may not have all the results or clinical information required to make a thorough assessment.

Please note, if the clinician refers you for diagnostic tests, please check your Bupa cover to understand which diagnostic tests are covered and funded. Typically only tests ordered by a Specialist Consultant are covered – you can receive a referral to see a Specialist Consultant through the Bupa Blua Health service.

Problems with your referral

If you have any problems with your referral, please contact our support team.

How will I receive my referral results?

The private healthcare provider you choose will send you the results of your exam or test.

We ask all private healthcare providers to send test results back to your NHS GP. Some may choose to send your results back to us as well. In this case our clinical team will review your results and we'll contact you if there is anything urgent that you need to speak to a Bupa Blua Health clinician about.

For an update on your results, contact your private healthcare provider directly.

Can Bupa Blua Health clinicians refer me to an NHS specialist?

Bupa Blua Health clinicians can only refer you to a private specialist and for private diagnostic tests. If you want an NHS referral, you should contact your registered NHS GP.

Can Bupa Blua Health clinicians provide referrals?

Bupa Blua Health clinicians can provide private specialist, diagnostic, and pathology referrals. The referral can then be taken to any private specialist or private clinic/hospital for further examination and treatment. In some instances, it may be suitable for you to speak with a recognised Bupa specialist via video consultation, in which case the support team can organise this for you within a few working days.

Can Bupa Blua Health clinicians issue fit (sick) notes?

Yes, a Bupa Blua Health GP can give you a fit note if needed.

Fit notes obtained through the Bupa Blua Health service are not valid when applying for Universal Credit or other benefits. Only your NHS GP can issue the NHS Fit Note you will need for this.

If you have been told to self-isolate because of coronavirus and you need a note for your employer, you should use the NHS 111 online service.
