Sustainability at Bupa
Learn more about how we’re making a better world for everyone
Health as we know it is changing.
For over 70 years, Bupa has focused on health. And we now know that everyone’s mental and physical health is connected to the health of our planet. For example, cleaner air means we can breathe easier; less anxiety about the future is better for our mental wellbeing; and the stronger our mental health, the more we can do to protect the environment.
The climate change emergency is a major threat to our own health, as well as the planet’s. The good news is that we can all make healthy and environmentally friendly behaviour changes that last. It’s simple: the more we take care of our planet, the more we can all live longer, healthier and happier lives.
Along with our colleagues, clients and customers, Bupa is on a journey to help make a better world. We’re committed to doing all we can, environmentally and in our communities, to make a positive difference. Whether the impact is felt thousands of miles away or on our own doorstep, we’ll never stop working towards a healthier future for all.
Our purpose
By making the world a healthier place we can help to make people better, too. And we believe change starts right here – at Bupa.
For our planet
We’re committed to reaching net zero emissions and tackling food and plastic waste.
For our physical health
We care for our customers’ physical wellbeing and show how it’s linked to our planet’s health, too.
For our mental health
We value mental wellbeing, so we help to fund community projects that offer vital support.
Our key objectives
1. For our planet
Across Bupa, we’ve committed to reach net zero by 2040
We were one of the first big healthcare companies to sign up to the Science Based Targets initiative, joining others worldwide in following the science to reduce carbon.
2. For our physical health
We’re researching the link between human health and the health of our planet
Climate change directly affects respiratory health. Across Europe, we can expect to see a 40% increase in predisposition to allergies by 2040.
3. For our mental health
We’re giving back to local communities
We’re investing 1% of our profits into local charitable causes, because we know that making a better world starts on our own doorstep.
Working in partnership with One Carbon World™

Since 2019, we’ve been offsetting our carbon emissions so that we’re carbon neutral. Offsetting is done by supporting projects that reduce or remove greenhouse gas emissions from the atmosphere.
To do this here at Bupa, we work with One Carbon World™, a not-for-profit partner of the UN’s Climate Neutral Now initiative. As part of this, we’re investing in reforestation projects in South America and renewable energy projects in India.
