A global health insurance policy can provide worldwide cover and access to treatment for expats, frequent global travellers and those who work abroad. It gives you the option of private health treatment and cover at home and abroad, via one policy. Policies may offer cover for individuals, families and businesses.
How does global health insurance work?
Having an international health insurance policy can remove the need to use another country’s local or public health systems if you need medical care outside of the UK. Like private health insurance in the UK, international private health insurance gives you access to private treatment, usually via monthly or annual payments. Cover usually lasts for a year at a time.
When you get a quote for international health insurance, you’ll be asked about the medical history of anyone you’d like to include on the policy. This helps your insurer to work out the cost of insuring you, and may mean you’re unable to claim for health conditions or symptoms that have affected you previously.
Many global health insurance providers offer different levels of cover. These cover levels may apply to specific regions of the world, or only include certain types of treatment. It’s important to do your research to make sure your policy suits your healthcare needs and budget.
