What is an MSK physician consultation?
Musculoskeletal (MSK) physicians are doctors who are experts in diagnosing and treating conditions that affect your muscles, bones, and joints. Whether you’re recovering from an injury, managing arthritis, or dealing with ongoing pain, they can help you move more easily and comfortably.
MSK physicians offer a variety of treatments following a thorough consultation and assessment for acute or chronic injuries. They can offer ultrasound guided injections, shockwave therapy, onward referral for an MRI or surgery if necessary.

Techniques used by MSK physicians
Your physician will explain what each treatment is and how it will help you. They may use a variety of techniques to treat pain and improve movement, including:
Diagnostic tests
If appropriate, they can order tests such as X-rays, MRI scans and blood tests to diagnose the problem. They also have access to diagnostic ultrasound which enables them to make an accurate diagnosis of your injury or condition.
Shockwave therapy
The MSK physician will apply mechanical shockwaves to your skin using a machine. These audible waves increase blood flow to the injured areas. By increasing blood flow it speeds up your body's healing process.
Injections
To help diagnose or ease your pain, your MSK physician may suggest an injection. Depending on your location, some of our clinics offer both spinal and non-spinal injections, including:
- Joint injections
- Steroid injections
- Hyaluronic Acid Injections
- Soft Tissue Injections
