Mounjaro
What is Mounjaro?
Mounjaro is a prescription medicine used to help adults manage their weight. It contains the active ingredient tirzepatide. It works by helping control your appetite, making you feel fuller for longer and reducing hunger.
Mounjaro is given as a once-weekly injection and is one part of our Weight Management Plan that focuses on long-term healthy weight loss.
Who is Mounjaro for?
Mounjaro is for adults aged 18 and over with a BMI of 30 or higher, or 27 or higher if you have a weight-related condition such as high blood pressure or high cholesterol.
It isn’t suitable if you’re pregnant, breastfeeding or have certain medical conditions such as severe stomach or thyroid problems.
How to use Mounjaro injections
Mounjaro is taken once a week using a pre-filled injection pen. Each pen has four doses, which last for four weeks.
You’ll inject it under your skin, usually in your stomach, thigh or upper arm. You can do this at any time of day, with or without food.
Your dose will start low and gradually increase over a few weeks. This helps your body get used to the medicine and lowers the chance of side effects.
At your consultation, you’ll be shown how to use the pen safely. Always follow the dose and instructions given to you by your GP.
How long does Mounjaro take to work?
For some, Mounjaro may start to work from the first few doses but it can take several weeks to reach full effect. You may notice a reduced appetite or feel fuller after eating within the first few weeks.
How effective is Mounjaro?
Studies have shown positive results on weight loss when combining Mounjaro with behaviour change support. Those who use Mounjaro can lose on average up to 20% of their body weight after about a year.
Mounjaro can also help improve blood sugar and cholesterol levels. The amount of weight you lose will depend on:
- your personal situation
- the support you receive
- how long you take Mounjaro
Unfortunately, not everyone loses weight by using Mounjaro.
