Havering Court Bupa Care Home in Romford, Essex is celebrating the home achieving a ‘good’ overall rating from the Care Quality Commission (CQC), with inspectors emphasising how knowledgeable staff are in areas such as management of medicines, safety procedures, and the personalisation of care plans for residents.

The report details the home’s robust process for ordering medicines and highlights staff’s ability to demonstrate safe practice when administering and managing treatments. In addition, the CQC praises the fact that nursing staff receive regular training and undergo yearly assessments, to ensure the professional handling of all resident prescriptions and medications. Staff were particularly commended for their extensive knowledge of medicines that are required to be administered at specific times and for various health conditions.

The inspector found that not only were care plans detailed, but the service offered was person-centred and non-restrictive, meaning care plans were tailored to each resident’s background, specific health conditions and support needs, whilst allowing them the freedom to make their own choices in daily activities.

Havering Court boasts a busy programme of activities each week, which allows residents and staff to connect, as well as encouraging an inclusive, social atmosphere. The group activities range from arts and crafts to quizzes, while solo activities like meditation are also available.

The home is also commended for making a concerted effort to build links with the local community, such as with schools and colleges, to help develop meaningful activities for people. It also helps relatives stay in touch with residents’ daily lives by distributing monthly leaflets informing them of forthcoming events and most recently helping to arrange video calls.

Commenting on the findings, Kay Dwyer, Activities Manager at Havering Court Bupa Care Home, said: "I love planning and being involved with activities at the home. You really get to know people and their personal interests, such as their favourite hobbies, colours, and foods. I take great pride in being able to adapt our programme to suite our residents’ changing needs."

The Bupa care home actively works with other healthcare professionals to provide high quality support for those living in their care. The CQC recognised efforts to work with the local authority to deliver effective care and support to meet a range of needs. Additionally, Havering Court has also proven to provide its in-house staff with regular guidance on care-giving and additional training on infection control. The report praises the home for having ample trained staff on duty to meet occupants’ needs and keep them safe.

Residents’ comments reflected the findings, with one person highlighting how secure they feel at Havering Court: "I feel very safe and looked after. My carers know me very well, they know what I like and don’t like. All the staff are very caring and understand my needs.”

One relative echoed this, stating that they have confidence in the staff’s ability to keep residents safe: "It is a very safe home, I have no concerns that my family member is not safe. They are well cared for as the staff are well trained and knowledgeable of care needs.”

The CQC praised the ‘well-led’ team of staff, and relatives of residents at Havering Court described the staff as ‘respectful,’ ‘supportive,’ and ‘friendly.’

Regional Director, Sarah-Jane Clapson, said: “We are really pleased with the report. For our standard of care to be recognised as ‘good’ is testament to the team’s continued commitment. As the report states, we have implemented a number of systems for monitoring and improving the quality of care, as we want to provide the most comfortable and safe environment possible for our residents.

“All the staff here work really hard to help our residents live longer, healthier and happier lives. The best part of our job is being able to see them smile. We’ll continue to act upon the feedback to ensure everyone has the best time with us.”
