Islington care home praised by regulators
The Highgate Bupa Care Home in Islington is celebrating a ‘good’ overall rating from the Care Quality Commission (CQC), with inspectors highlighting examples of thriving community links and person-centred care.
The home received high commendation for retaining links to the local community, even during lockdown, with the home replacing regular visits from local schools with video sessions, allowing the continuation of seasonal activities such as Christmas carol concerts. There were also records of residents being shown how to use tablets to do their own shopping online and keep in touch with family members and friends.
The report gave praise to the activity co-ordinators, providing a daily selection of organised events for residents, from arts and crafts and baking to tea parties and one-off celebrations such as birthdays. While recognition was also given for the provision of one-to-one activities. These included listening to music, watching movies, sensory activities such as hand massages and the use of sensory lights.
Inspectors found that resident care plans included guidance specific to each individual resident, to ensure all their personal needs were met. While specific praise was received for the home’s end-of-life care – providing the best possible person-centred care and comfort to the resident in familiar surroundings.
The CQC further recognised the efforts of The Highgate, and its commitment to infection prevention control during the COVID-19 pandemic – with arrangements put in place to enable family members and friends to safely visit people living at the home.
Regional Director, Carol Baldock, said: “We’re exceptionally proud that our team’s efforts have been recognised within this report. Achieving a ‘good’ rating is real testament to our continued commitment in delivering the best quality care for our residents."
