How testicular cancer screening works
If you're looking for reassurance and have no symptoms, a Targeted Cancer Screening can help you learn more about your testicular health. During your 30-minute appointment, your GP can check for early signs of testicular cancer and discuss any questions or concerns about your testicular health.
It's a pay-as-you-go service, so you don’t need Bupa health insurance to book. Which checks are available depends on your age and what's medically relevant to you.
Most testicular changes aren't cancer, but finding cancer early can make treatment simpler and more effective.
What to expect at a Targeted Cancer Screening for testicular cancer
Appointment overview

Before your appointment, we’ll send you a questionnaire to complete. During your appointment, a GP will talk through your answers. If testicular cancer screening is right for you, the GP will carry this out. They may also recommend other screening tests based on your age, medical history and individual needs.
How we check for testicular cancer
There isn't a routine screening test for testicular cancer. Instead, a physical examination is the main way to check for signs of cancer in people without symptoms.
Testicular cancer examination
Age 18+
Your GP may feel for lumps and swelling on your testicles, as well as their size and texture. They’ll also make sure you’re confident doing self-checks at home.

Because Targeted Cancer Screening is personalised, your GP may also recommend one or more of the following prostate cancer checks, at no additional cost:
Prostate Specific Antigen blood test (PSA)
Age 50+ unless clinically recommended
If you're over 50, a PSA test can help detect problems with your prostate. You may also be offered this from age 45, depending on factors like your family history and ethnicity. Your doctor will discuss the pros and cons of the test with you.
Prostate cancer examination
Age 50+
The PSA blood test is the main way to screen for prostate cancer. In some cases, your GP may also offer a prostate examination.
Before you decide whether to have it, they'll explain how it works, and what it can and can’t tell us. If you choose to go ahead, they may examine your prostate through the wall of your rectum (back passage). While this can feel uncomfortable, it shouldn't be painful.
After your appointment
After your appointment, we'll share your results and let you know if any follow-up is recommended. If your examination or test results show that further investigation may be helpful, the GP can arrange a private referral. Or, with your consent, they can write to your NHS GP recommending an NHS referral.
