Health insurance with dental allowance
Dental care for all the family
Our health insurance now comes with one Bupa Dental Care appointment every year, for everyone on your policy.
We’ll also give everyone who’s covered a £300 allowance each towards restorative treatments. That’s things like fillings, crowns, or bridges.
We’re giving this with all new private health cover policies.
Is dental allowance available to me?
I pay for my cover
If you already have private health cover with us, we’ll add this to your policy when you renew, from 1 August 2024.
We’re giving this with all new private health cover policies.
My employer pays for my health cover
This benefit is just for our private customers. It doesn’t come with Bupa cover you might have through your employer
What is the new dental allowance?
One Bupa Dental Care appointment every year
This can be a routine check-up, a new patient appointment, or an emergency appointment.
Plus £300 towards restorative treatment
Restorative treatments repair or replace your teeth. They include things like fillings, crowns, or bridges.
For all the family
Everyone on your policy can get one appointment and a £300 allowance each, every year. Including children.
Private dental care for emergencies
You can use your appointment and your £300 allowance for emergency care. See what’s not covered.
How the dental allowance works
1. Find a Bupa Dental Care practice
You’ll need to go to a Bupa Dental Care practice for your appointment.
Search our directory to find one near you.
2. Book your appointment
Book directly with a Bupa Dental Care practice online or over the phone.
You don’t need to call Bupa health insurance to pre-authorise this.
3. Your appointment
If you’re not already registered with the practice, you can do this at your appointment.
Tell the practice your health insurance membership number. This is on your policy documents.
4. Next steps
Your dentist will tell you if you need further treatment. You can book this without pre-authorising with us.
After treatment, your practice will send us your claim. We’ll pay them up to £300. You’ll pay any additional costs direct to the practice.
Your dental appointment will be fully covered by your policy. This includes any X-rays you may need during the appointment.
Included in the appointment
- Examination of your mouth, teeth, gums, cheeks, and tongue.
- Chat about any problems or pain you’ve had since your last check-up.
- Advice on things you can do to improve your oral health. For example, advice about diet and how to brush.
- If needed, X-rays of your mouth.
- Checks for signs of mouth cancer or other diseases.
- Advice about your next steps. Your dentist will let you know if you need further treatment.
More about your £300 allowance
You’ll pay any costs above £300
For example, if your treatment cost £350, we will pay £300, and you would pay the remaining £50. You would pay this £50 direct to the practice.
You can use your £300 after your Bupa Dental Care appointment
You can use your allowance towards treatment that you need after your appointment. You don’t have to use it straight away. But you can’t carry your balance into the next policy year. Your allowance will reset back to £300 each year, when you renew.
Using this allowance with dental insurance
If you already have dental cover with us or another insurer, you can still use this allowance. See the 'other insurance cover' section of your policy guide. Or call our team for help.

Who can use this dental benefit?
Anyone covered on your policy can get an appointment and a £300 allowance. This includes children.
- New private health insurance customers. We’ll include this in new policies that start after 1 August 2024.
- Existing private health insurance customers. We’ll add this to existing policies when they are renewed. We’ll start this from 1 August 2024.
This benefit is just for our private customers. It doesn’t come with Bupa cover you might have through your employer.
What’s not covered?
Not covered by the dental allowance:
- Any treatment by a non-Bupa dental professional
- Cosmetic treatment
These are treatments you choose to have but that you do not need for medical reasons. For example teeth whitening. - Dental injuries from contact sports
These are injuries to your teeth or gums from playing contact sports, such as rugby or boxing. - Routine hygienist appointments
We may cover treatment by a hygienist if it is part of your restorative treatment plan. But preventative dental care, like routine cleaning, is not covered.
For a full list of treatments that aren’t covered, see our terms and conditions.
