Digital GP
Our digital GP service connects you to expert care day or night
Setting a new standard in digital healthcare
Access the healthcare you want, where you want with Bupa digital GP. Digital GP is included with most Bupa health insurance policies†
Talk to an online doctor by video or audio call, day or night, including weekends and bank holidays. You can also talk to a nurse, physio or mental health specialist.
We recommend accessing these specialist services as your first contact to starting treatment, so you can get the right expert advice and care first time.
You can have your appointment wherever you are too – home, work, or the bottom of the garden. No need to take time out of work, sort childcare, or get to the GP surgery. You can even stay in your pyjamas if you’re feeling poorly.
Get a video or audio appointment within 24 hours. Speak to a GP or advanced nurse practitioner between 6am and 10pm, or our physios and mental health specialists between 8am and 8pm
If you’re happy to pay for a private prescription, you can collect your medication from a local pharmacy. Or, you can pay to have it delivered to your door.
Use your usual Bupa digital account sign-in details to sign-in to the My Bupa app and access digital GP services.
Feel reassured that your personal data is safe and secure.
Making Healthcare easier
For more information about how Digital GP works, see our FAQs section. We cover everything from making an appointment, fit notes and how prescriptions work.
Don't have health insurance or a subscription with us? No problem. You can choose Bupa’s self-pay service, Remote GP from Bupa Clinics instead.
Digital GP is the smart way to access care
Fast and convenient access to healthcare
Save time with our digital appointments in the My Bupa App. Speak to GPs, nurses, physios and mental health specialists. Book video or audio appointments during the day and evenings, on weekends or bank holidays.
Book a video or audio appointment
Choose whether to have your call by video or voice only. Anyone named on your Bupa health insurance can book a digital GP appointment, and it won’t affect your claims.
Specialist support when you need it
Whether it’s a little niggle or a bigger concern, you can get digital appointments to speak with specialists such as physios and mental health specialists to discuss whatever’s on your mind. These specialists will be able to advise the best next steps for you.
Get prescriptions sent to your home or a local pharmacy
You may be prescribed medication. You can get it delivered to your door, usually within 48 hours, or you can pick it up from your chosen pharmacy, usually within the hour. These prescriptions are private, so you'll need to pay for your medication and delivery.
Onward referrals
If you’re a health insurance customer, your clinician may refer you for tests or treatment. If they do this, you’ll need to get authorisation from Bupa before you book an appointment. Your clinician can usually get authorisation for you automatically. Or they’ll let you know if you need to call us to discuss your options.
Use your usual Bupa sign-in details
If you already have a Bupa digital account, such as My Bupa or Be.Me, you can use the same details to access digital GP services. We’re making it easier to access the care you need. All with the safety and data security you’d expect from Bupa.
From now on, health insurance customers will access digital GP appointments in the My Bupa app rather than the Bupa Blua Health app. If digital GP is included in your cover, you'll continue to enjoy the benefits of a digital GP service.
It only takes a few seconds to download the My Bupa app from Google Play or the App Store. If you already have a My Bupa digital account then you can use your usual sign-in to make an appointment.
If you get your Bupa health insurance through your employer, check with your employee benefits rep or your HR team.
Digital GP, available in the My Bupa app, offers you a choice of healthcare professionals, not just GPs. That's because we want to guide you to the most appropriate source of support as quickly as possible.
Book an online appointment with a physiotherapist. A phone or video call can be an effective way to get help from a physiotherapist. They can assess and treat a large range of muscular and joint conditions, and could also refer you for further treatment if you’re a health insurance customer or recommend some at home exercises.
Book an online appointment with a nurse. An advanced nurse practitioner can diagnose and treat most common illnesses such as coughs, earaches, sore throats and urinary tract infections. They can also help with more complex problems. Just like GPs, they can also issue prescriptions. Prescriptions are private, so you'll need to pay for your medication.
Book an online appointment with a mental health practitioner. They can assess and treat a wide range of symptoms and if you’re a health insurance customer, could refer you on if you need further support.
Yes. You’ll be able to do this when you book an appointment in the My Bupa app.
You can view your past My Bupa appointments in the app, so this can be a helpful reminder if you’d like to talk to the same clinician again.
You can join your appointment in your My Bupa app and tap the appointment which shows at the top of the home page.
If you’d rather join through My Bupa on the web, sign in to your digital account, go to ‘Digital appointments’ then ‘Upcoming appointments’. Select ‘Join appointment’ and wait for your session to start.
Yes, if the online doctor thinks you need one. However, the fit note they give you may not be valid for Universal Credit or other benefits, or for statutory sick pay purposes. You’ll probably need to see your NHS GP for that, so please check with your employer.
If you need urgent medical attention then you should contact the emergency services instead of turning to the app. Here are a few examples of when you should call 999:
- Chest pain
- Severe bleeding
- Severe difficulty in breathing (shortness of breath)
- Sudden, severe pain anywhere in the body
- Moderate to severe burns
- Convulsions or seizures
- A sudden change in mental status (such as unusual behaviour, confusion, or difficulty waking from sleep)
- Head or spinal injuries
- Serious limb impairment or broken bones
- If you have harmed yourself or have plans to end your life
You can book an appointment while you’re abroad but the appointment must take place within the UK.
All of the online clinicians you’ll meet through digital GP are registered with and regulated by the relevant statutory bodies:
- GPs are regulated by the General Medical Council (GMC)
- Nurses are regulated by the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC)
- Physiotherapists are regulated by the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC)
- Our mental health practitioners are regulated by a number of bodies depending on their modality. This includes the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC), the British Association for Behavioural and Cognitive Psychotherapies (BABCP), and the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP)
The digital GP service via My Bupa, is inspected and regulated by the Care Quality Commission in the United Kingdom.
If you’re prescribed medication during your appointment, you’ll receive an email with a code on it. This is an electronic prescription.
You can take this code to a pharmacy of your choice and they can dispense the medication. Please remember that this is a private prescription, so you’ll have to pay for your prescription when you collect it at the pharmacy.
Bupa’s digital GP prescriptions are private, so you'll need to pay for your medication.
The cost will vary according to the product and the pharmacy. You won't always have to pay more than the NHS prescription charge. Some of the most commonly prescribed medications cost less than the NHS prescription charge.
If you find that the medication you need is going to cost more with a private prescription, you can see your NHS GP and ask if an NHS prescription can be issued instead. You would pay the standard NHS prescription cost for medication with an NHS prescription.
Most Bupa health insurance customers have access to digital GP.
If digital GP is included in your cover, anyone named on your Bupa private health insurance can use the service.
Children under the age of 16 can access appointments and use other features of this app, but only if they are named on the main member's policy and eligible. Only the main member can make appointments for them. Children under 16 can only have a consultation with an online doctor if a parent or guardian is present, and it must be a video call.
There is no limit to the number of appointments you can have.
All notes made during the appointment will be made available to you within the app at the end of each call.
If you give explicit consent at the time of booking your consultation, a summary of the appointment will be emailed to you, which you can then share with your NHS GP. We will never share your medical information with your employer.
Restricted members of our senior clinical management team, who are managing your care, can also access your details if needed. Our privacy notice End User License Agreement explains how and where your information may be shared.
You will always be logged out of the My Bupa app after 20 minutes of inactivity.
Even if someone tried to access your clinical records while you’re signed in on another device, they’d be asked to re-enter your password. If you've chosen a password that enables you to access certain parts of our app, you're responsible for not sharing this password. Please don't share your password with anyone.
If your phone offers Touch or Face ID, you can choose to enable it within the app for an extra layer of security.
You can access digital GP services if you have a Bupa Well+ subscription.
Alternatively, you can use our self-pay Remote GP service instead.
† Some corporate schemes don't include access to digital GP, so please check your scheme documents or give us a call.
