What support is available to me through medical insurance?
Health insurance is designed to treat conditions that develop after you have started your policy.
The treatment will depend on:
- The condition you’re diagnosed with
- What you’re eligible for under your policy
- Whether the treatment will restore your health to what it was before your diagnosis
There are some things that health insurance doesn’t cover. These usually are:
- Chronic conditions - long term illnesses that need ongoing monitoring or treatment
- Pre-existing conditions - conditions that have started before you took out your policy
- Cosmetic surgery - treatment to change your appearance isn’t usually covered, unless it’s needed for medical reasons
I’ve just been diagnosed. Does my health insurance cover my treatment?
Health insurance covers lots of different treatments, but some treatments are more commonly claimed for than others.
Common claims that are covered include:
- Physiotherapy for back, neck and knee pain
- MRI and CT scans for new symptoms
- Cancer treatment
- Mental health therapies
- Cataract surgery
- Ear, nose and throat (ENT) surgeries
- Dermatology
Common claims that aren’t covered include:
- In vitro fertilisation (IVF)
- Egg freezing
- Weight loss injections
- Sleep apnoea testing
To be sure you’re covered for treatment for any claim, contact your health insurer.

What happens after my treatment?
Receiving treatment is just part of your healthcare journey. Depending on your condition, you might receive some after care too.
Follow up appointments
For most treatments, you can expect a follow-up appointment. These are usually needed to monitor your recovery and check for any complications.
Rehabilitation and recovery
Depending on the treatment you’ve had, you might need rehabilitation or physiotherapy to help with your recovery.
If your condition is covered for treatment, rehabilitation and physiotherapy is likely to be also covered, but check with your insurer.
Mental health support
Recovery isn’t always physical.
Sometimes you might need some mental health support to help to get you back to feeling yourself. Bupa policies often include mental health cover.
If you have received treatment for cancer and you have a Bupa policy, you’re likely to be covered to speak to a mental health professional too.
How do I choose the right private health insurance policy for me?
Choosing a health insurance policy depends on your health needs, budget and lifestyle. Some things you should consider are:
Your health needs
It’s important to think about your needs to make sure you take out a policy that covers exactly what is important to you.
For private diagnosis and treatment, you’ll need comprehensive health insurance.
If you’re happy to be diagnosed by the NHS but want to receive treatment privately, you can get Treatment and Care cover.
Your budget
There are different options you can choose when taking out health insurance cover that will influence the cost. These are things like:
- Excess limits
- Outpatient allowances
- Hospital network
How you choose these options will impact how much you pay per month for your private health insurance.
Extras and rewards
Some health insurance policies include rewards and extras that might help you save money.
Some cover includes access to virtual GP and wellness programmes as additional extras to add more value to the cover.
