Why might I need contraception?
One of the main uses of contraception is to prevent pregnancy when you have sex. Contraceptives can work in different ways with different benefits, such as managing some menstrual conditions. If you are wondering what contraceptive method is suitable for you, then our GPs may be able to help.
If you are looking for emergency contraception like the emergency contraceptive pill or copper coil, you will need to visit us within 3 to 5 days of having unprotected sex. If you are unable to book an immediate appointment with us in this timeframe, you can consult your local NHS and pharmacy services.
How does our Contraceptive Service work?

30 minute initial consultation with a doctor
Before your appointment
We’ll send you a questionnaire before your appointment. The questionnaire will ask you about your menstrual history, risk of pregnancy and medical history. This will help give us an idea of your reasons for attending and determine which contraceptive methods are best suited to you.
What we might check on the day
Height and weight
We will need to take these measurements if considering certain oral prescriptions.
Examination
We may need to carry out a physical examination to ensure certain methods of contraception work for your body. The doctor will ask for consent, explain what they are going to do and try to ensure it is as comfortable as possible.
Blood pressure
We’ll check both arms to see if your blood pressure is ok.
Swabs
We may request to take swabs if we suspect you are at risk of an STI or if you are experiencing symptoms such as abnormal discharge or irregular bleeding.
Swabs will be charged on the day as an extra cost if carried out.
What the GP will discuss with you
- The GP may go through the questionnaire and ask any further relevant questions.
- They will talk you through the most suitable contraceptive method for you.
If you are being fitted with an implant or a coil, these will need a follow-up appointment. For any further tests or appointments that are an extra cost, we’ll always discuss your options with you first.
After your consultation
Access to Anytime HealthLine
If you need advice, Anytime HealthLine puts you through to nurses ready to help. And when we say anytime, we mean it. They’re around for support 24 hours a day.
You will have access to our Anytime HealthLine nurses for a year following your appointment.
Access to your results
If we send any swabs to the lab, we'll send you a letter once we receive the results. For anything that needs urgent action, we'll call you to discuss it.
Access to information hub
Do you want to know more about the main types of contraception? Or perhaps you are looking for more information on the contraceptive coil or implant? We’ve got lots of health information resources and advice available in our health information hub.
