What is a mole check?

A mole check is a detailed look at your skin to spot anything unusual that could signal a problem, like melanoma or other types of skin cancer.

A dermatologist or nurse examines the size, shape, colour and texture of your moles, as well as any new marks on your skin. They’re looking for signs such as uneven edges, multiple colours or fast growth. All of these can be early warnings.

What happens during a mole check?

The dermatologist or nurse will ask about your medical history, including any family history of skin cancer. They’ll also want to know if you’ve noticed anything unusual on your skin.

Next, they’ll take a closer look using a tool called a dermatoscope. It gives a magnified, well-lit view of your moles and skin.

If anything seems out of the ordinary, the dermatologist may recommend a biopsy. This means taking a sample to send to the lab for further testing.

Mole mapping is a way of staying on top of changes in your skin happening over time. Using specialist imaging tools, we create a record of your moles so any changes in size, colour or shape can be caught early. You’ll get a copy of your mole map, and we’ll invite you back for a review in a year (or sooner if you notice a mole has changed).

When should I consider mole removal?
