What are caudal epidural injections?
Caudal epidural injections are used to treat lower back pain and sciatica, resulting from conditions like slipped or herniated discs. The procedure involves injecting a corticosteroid mixed with saline into the epidural space near the tailbone. This aims to reduce inflammation and alleviate pain by delivering the medication directly into the affected area.
What to expect from a caudal epidural injection
Before your injection appointment
You will have already had an MSK physician consultation, where your physician recommended a caudal injection to help reduce pain and inflammation.
You’ll need an MSK physician consultation before your injection. You can book this online, but injection appointments must be made at the clinic on the day of your consultation. The cost of the consultation is separate from the injection.

What happens during the appointment
Consultation with MSK physician
You will first have a consultation to discuss your symptoms and medical history. The doctor will explain the procedure and answer any questions.
Injection
You’ll lie face down on the examination table, and the skin over the injection site will be cleaned. A local anaesthetic will be applied to numb the area. Using X-ray guidance, a fine needle will be inserted into the base of your spine, injecting the medication.
After your appointment
After your appointment you’ll rest in a recovery area where healthcare professionals will monitor you for a short time. You may experience some numbness or mild discomfort at the injection site, but this should ease quickly. Avoid driving, strenuous activities, and heavy lifting for the rest of the day. Most people can resume normal activities within a few days after the procedure.

Follow up appointment
Your physician will let you know if a follow up appointment is needed. This may depend on how well the injection works and if you need further treatment.
Post-injection care
Once you’re in less pain, it’s important that you book to see a physiotherapist. They can monitor your progress and provide you with a graduated exercise programme to increase your strength and mobility.
