What is radiofrequency denervation?
Radiofrequency denervation is a treatment for chronic back, neck or joint pain. It uses heat from radio waves to target nerves that send pain signals, helping to reduce discomfort. The procedure is quick, and many people feel lasting pain relief.
What to expect from radiofrequency denervation
Before your injection appointment
You will have already had an MSK physician consultation, where your physician recommended radiofrequency denervation to help manage your symptoms and reduce pain.
Radiofrequency denervation injections can help with a variety of conditions affecting muscles, joints, bones and the nervous system, including:
Degenerative disc disease |
Headaches |
Low back pain |
Neck pain |
Pelvic girdle pain |
Post knee replacement pain |
Sacroiliac joint pain |
Slipped disc |
Thoracic back pain |
Whiplash |
You’ll need an MSK physician consultation before your injection. You can book this online, but injection appointments must be made at the clinic on the day of your consultation. The cost of the consultation is separate from the injection.

What happens during the appointment
Consultation with MSK physician
You will first have a consultation to discuss your symptoms and medical history. The doctor will explain the procedure and answer any questions.
Injection
You’ll lie on the examination table while the doctor cleans the targeted area and numbs it with local anaesthetic. Using X-ray guidance, a fine needle will be inserted near the targeted nerves. A small electrical pulse checks the correct position before heat is applied to disrupt pain signals. This procedure usually takes around 30 to 60 minutes.
After your appointment
After your appointment you’ll rest in a recovery area where healthcare professionals will monitor you for a short time. You may experience some soreness or numbness at the injection site, but this should ease quickly. You can return to most activities the next day, though it is best to avoid strenuous exercise for a few days.

Follow up appointment
You will be booked in for a follow up and progress report and the doctor will decide then on any further treatment if appropriate. It is important to book in with one of our practitioners so they can guide you in a programme of gradual return to full fitness.
Post-injection care
Once you’re in less pain, it’s important that you book to see a physiotherapist. They can monitor your progress and provide you with a graduated exercise programme to increase your strength and mobility.
