What are steroid injections?
Steroid (corticosteroid) injections help reduce pain and inflammation in joints, muscles and soft tissues. They’re often used to treat arthritis, tendonitis and back pain. The injection delivers an anti-inflammatory medicine directly to the affected area, providing fast and long-lasting relief.
What to expect from a steroid injection
Before your injection appointment
You will have already had an MSK physician consultation, where your physician recommended a steroid injection to reduce inflammation and provide pain relief in joints or soft tissues.
Steroid injections can help with a variety of conditions affecting muscles, joints, bones and the nervous system, including:
AC joint sprain |
Achilles Tendonitis |
Arthritis |
Bursitis |
Back pain |
Golfer’s / tennis elbow |
Hip pain |
Knee pain |
Meniscus injury |
Shoulder pain |
Tendon injury |
Sacroiliac joint pain |
You’ll need an MSK physician consultation before your injection. You can book this online, but injection appointments must be made at the clinic on the day of your consultation. The cost of the consultation is separate from the injection.

What happens during the appointment
Consultation with MSK physician
You will first have a consultation to discuss your symptoms and medical history. The doctor will explain the procedure and answer any questions.
Injection
Your physician will clean the affected area and may use a local anaesthetic to numb it. The steroid injection is then carefully given into the affected joint, muscle, or soft tissue.
After your appointment
After your appointment you may experience some soreness, but this should improve within a few days. Your doctor may advise you to rest the treated area and avoid strenuous activities for a short time.

Follow up appointment
Your physician will let you know if a follow up appointment is needed. This may depend on how well the injection works and if you need further treatment.
Post-injection care
Once you’re in less pain, it’s important that you book to see a physiotherapist. They can monitor your progress and provide you with a graduated exercise programme to increase your strength and mobility.
