Local Care Home resident celebrates 100th birthday

30 April 2021

Residents and carers at Woodend Bupa Care Home in Altrincham have come together to celebrate a 100th birthday.

Rowland Fleming turned 100 on Thursday 4th March and enjoyed a party with fellow residents and staff at Woodend, where he has lived for the past two months alongside his wife, Beryl.

Carers at the home decorated the lounge with birthday banners and balloons and the celebrations were accompanied by Rowland’s favourite music, as well as a homemade birthday cake, a buffet and board games.

To mark the special day, Rowland and Beryl received visits from their children throughout the day, in the home’s visitor pod. Rowland was surrounded by loved ones as he opened his congratulatory card from Her Majesty, The Queen for reaching his 100th year.

When asked about celebrating his 100th birthday this year, Rowland said: “I’m truly grateful to have celebrated my 100th birthday with the love of my life and our children, I feel so blessed. In my short time at Woodend, I’ve felt so welcomed by the staff and residents here and I’d like to thank everyone for making such a fuss and helping me celebrate my special day.”

Rowland spent most of his working life as an Architect, but prior to this, served five years in the Royal Navy. Having learnt to play the piano at the age of 10, Rowland has always had a passion for music and shares that interest with wife Beryl.

Rowland describes his wife as a “shining light” in his life, with both viewing their first meet as “love at first sight”; and though Beryl says, “he’s as bossy as he was when we first started dating,” the couple celebrated their 70th year of marriage in 2020 – showing the incredible bond they share.

Sharing his secret on how to live a long, happy life, Rowland said: “I’d say it’s about being of service to others. You should always look to give without the expectation of receiving.”

Home Manager at Woodend Bupa Care Home, Andy Bradley, added: “We’re extremely pleased to have helped Rowland celebrate his 100th birthday here at Woodend, and I’m so honoured to have been a part of such an occasion. The team here at Woodend went above and beyond to make today memorable for Rowland and it is so rewarding to see him and Beryl so happy.”

Woodend is situated in Altrincham, Cheshire and offers a wide range of care for people of all ages, from those seeking residential and nursing care, to respite or support with early and advanced stages of dementia.
