What is a breast screening?
A Breast Health Check is recommended for anyone over 40. It can help spot changes in your breasts early, often before you notice any symptoms, such as a lump. Finding changes sooner can mean more treatment options and better outcomes.
Your appointment includes a consultation with a GP, a thorough breast examination and, if appropriate for you, a mammogram. A mammogram is an X-ray that can identify small changes in breast tissue, including lumps, often before they can be felt.

Before your appointment, we’ll send you a questionnaire to complete. During your 30-minute appointment, a GP will talk through your answers and discuss any questions or concerns you may have about your breast health. They'll then carry out a physical breast examination and, if appropriate for you, arrange a mammogram, either on-site that day or later at another centre.

Physical breast examination
As part of your appointment, the GP will carry out a physical breast examination. They’ll gently check for any changes, such as lumps or areas that feel different.
If they find anything that needs further investigation, they may arrange an appointment with a specialist.
Mammogram
A mammogram is an X-ray of your breasts. It can show early signs of cancer, often before you notice any symptoms. Finding cancer early usually means treatment is simpler and more effective.
The scan itself takes around 15 minutes. Each breast is placed between two plates for a few seconds while the X-ray is taken. You may feel some pressure but it isn’t painful.
Not everyone can have a mammogram. Whether it's right for you will depend on factors such as your age, medical history and when you last had a mammogram.
After your appointment
You’ll receive the results of your mammogram within 10 working days. Depending on your examination or test results, the GP can arrange a private referral. Or, with your consent, they can write to your NHS GP recommending an NHS referral.
Is a Breast Health Check right for me?
If you’ve noticed a lump or something that isn’t normal for you, see your GP or book a private GP appointment as soon as possible.
You should book a Breast Health Check if you:
- Are over the age of 40
- Have no current symptoms, but would like peace of mind
- Have a family history of cancer
- Want regular check-ups to stay healthy
Book a GP appointment instead if you have:
- A lump or thicker skin in your breast
- A change in breast shape
- Skin that looks red, puckered or dimpled
- Redness, a rash or crusting around your nipple
- Discharge from your nipple that isn’t milk
- Noticeable changes to your nipple such as sunken into your breast
How accurate are cancer screening tests?
Cancer screening can help identify signs of cancer early, but no test is 100% accurate. Sometimes a screening result may suggest further tests are needed when no cancer is found. In some cases, a screening result can also appear normal when cancer is present.
If you develop any new symptoms after your screening, it's important to speak to a doctor.
Do I need to have Bupa health insurance to get a Breast Health Check?
No, you do not need Bupa insurance to book a Breast Health Check. You can book this as a pay-as-you-go service.
This service is only available at our Bupa health centres, so you’ll need to be able to travel there.
