How prostate cancer screening works
As part of our 30-minute Targeted Cancer Screening, we can check for early signs of prostate cancer. The tests available depend on your age and what is medically relevant to you.
Our Targeted Cancer Screenings are designed for people without symptoms who want reassurance. It’s a pay-as-you-go service, so you don’t need Bupa health insurance to book.
Prostate cancer is often very treatable if found early. The risk rises with age, but spotting it sooner makes treatment more effective.
What to expect at a Targeted Cancer Screening for prostate cancer

Before your appointment, we’ll send you a questionnaire to complete. During your 30-minute appointment, a GP will talk through your answers and discuss any questions or concerns about prostate cancer screening. If screening is right for you, the GP will carry this out. They may also recommend other screening tests based on your age, medical history and individual needs.
Prostate cancer screening tests
Your appointment includes testing for prostate cancer if it’s appropriate for you given your age and medical history. Depending on what's clinically relevant to you, it may also include other cancer screening checks, at no extra cost.
Prostate Specific Antigen blood test (PSA)
Age 50+ (45+ if you're at higher risk)
If you're over 50, a PSA test can help detect problems with your prostate. You may also be offered this from age 45, depending on factors like your family history and your ethnicity. Your doctor will discuss the pros and cons of the test with you.
Prostate cancer examination
Age 50+ (45+ if you're at higher risk)
The PSA blood test is the main way to screen for prostate cancer. In some cases, your GP may also offer a prostate examination.
Before you decide whether to have it, they'll explain how it works, and what it can and can’t tell us. If you choose to go ahead, they may examine your prostate through the wall of your rectum (back passage). While this can feel uncomfortable, it shouldn't be painful.

Because Targeted Cancer Screening is personalised, your GP may also recommend a testicular cancer check. This is included in the price of your appointment.
Testicular cancer check
Age 18+
Your GP may feel for lumps and swelling on your testicles, as well as their size and texture. They’ll also make sure you’re confident doing self-checks at home.
After your appointment
After your appointment, we'll share your results and let you know if any follow-up is recommended. If your examination or test results show that further investigation may be helpful, the GP can arrange a private referral. Or, with your consent, they can write to your NHS GP recommending an NHS referral.

Is a cancer screening for me?
Our cancer screenings are for those without symptoms who are worried they may be at risk. If you’ve noticed anything unusual, see your GP or book a private GP appointment instead.
You should book a cancer screening if you:
- Are over the age of 18
- Have no current symptoms, but would like peace of mind
- Have a family history of cancer
- Haven't had recent screening
- You want regular check-ups to stay healthy
Book a GP appointment instead if you have:
Cancer symptoms including:
- A new lump in any area of your body
- Unusual bleeding (pee, vomit or poo)
- Unexplained weight loss
- Persistent fatigue or night sweats
- Change in poo (bowel) habits
How accurate are cancer screening tests?
Cancer screening can help identify signs of cancer early, but no test is 100% accurate. Sometimes a screening result may suggest further tests are needed when no cancer is found. In some cases, a screening result can also appear normal when cancer is present.
If you develop any new symptoms after your screening, it's important to speak to a doctor.
Do I need to have Bupa health insurance to get a cancer screening?
No, you do not need Bupa insurance to book a Targeted Cancer Screening. You can book this as a pay-as-you-go service.
This service is only available at our Bupa health centres, so you’ll need to be able to travel there.
