Premature ejaculation
What is premature ejaculation?
Premature ejaculation is when someone ejaculates too quickly during sex. It’s defined as ejaculating within a minute of sexual intercourse, but could be longer for men who have sex with men.
It's up to you and your partner to decide if you're happy with the time it takes you to ejaculate. If it’s something that worries you, there are ways to help.
When asking 500 couples, the average time for ejaculation was about five and a half minutes after starting sex.
What causes premature ejaculation?
There are two types of early ejaculation:
Primary premature ejaculation is where you have always had the problem. This is often caused by psychological problems, such as anxiety.
Secondary premature ejaculation (or "acquired premature ejaculation") is where the problem is new. This can be from psychological reasons, but physical factors can also play a part. Alcohol and drug use, as well as conditions such as a swollen prostate gland can cause this.
How can premature ejaculation be treated?
There are several ways to treat premature ejaculation. GPs may suggest certain medications or advise on techniques that can delay ejaculation. Psychological treatments can also sometimes be an option, but your GP will recommend the most effective treatment for you.
