What is osteopathy treatment?
Osteopathy is a physical treatment that helps relieve muscle and joint pain. It supports your body’s natural functions, reduces discomfort, and improves mobility.
Osteopaths treat a range of musculoskeletal conditions, including joint and muscle pain. The may also help with symptoms like headaches and circulatory issues.
What to expect at an osteopathy appointment
Appointment overview
Before your appointment, we’ll send you a form to complete. Your osteopath will assess your area of concern and create a treatment plan tailored to your needs. This could include hands on techniques or massages to help improve movement and ease discomfort.
Treatment often involves a few sessions, with each one adapted as you progress.
Techniques used by osteopaths
Your osteopath will explain what each treatment is and how it will help you. They may use a variety of techniques to treat pain and improve movement, including:
Acupuncture
Your osteopath may use fine needles to treat your pain. They will insert needles into certain points of the body depending on your condition. This is usually painless and may be in place for up to 30 minutes to have the best effect.
Exercises and stretches
A tailored exercise programme will be created for you. Your osteopath will guide you on the right technique so you get the most out of each exercise.
Manual therapy
Your osteopath will use their hands to apply pressure on muscle tissue.
Manipulation
Using their hands your osteopath may move your joints using firm pressure. This treatment is often used to reduce muscle spasms and restore joint mobility.
Mobilisation
Your osteopath may use their hands to move your joints to regain movement. They may also ask you to move against their resistance to improve muscle activation.
Postural and ergonomic advice
Poor posture can lead to long standing pain. Your osteopath may make recommendations on correction and workplace adjustments to help.
Soft tissue massage
Your osteopath may carry out soft massage techniques on your muscles. By increasing endorphins through massage, it will encourage a decrease in muscle spasms.
After your appointment
Your osteopath will provide you with a set of exercises that you can do at home or in the gym. They will offer aftercare advice and information to help keep your symptoms to a minimum. If you have any future flare ups, or new symptoms, you can book another appointment.
Book an appointment with an osteopath
