You may have recently read a story about the funeral of Stewart Cooney who sadly passed away at our Colton Lodges Nursing Home in Leeds and the wonderful send-off he received. This was all down to our Learning and Development Area Trainer, Dougie Eastwood.
When Dougie heard that it was likely that no would attend Stewart’s funeral he couldn’t let it happen. He launched a campaign through local media and the community to encourage people to attend the funeral and pay their respects to the 95 year old war veteran.
No one could have predicted the out-pouring of support that followed. The story was picked up by the Yorkshire Evening Post, then BBC and the The Daily Mail. Over 300 people attended the funeral including his long-lost sister and his nephew - to remember the hero, with a group of veterans carrying his coffin as a mark of respect.
