Should I use an electric or manual toothbrush?: Dr Ros O'Leary, Periodontist
Modern-day electric toothbrushes have been very well tested. There's a lot of science behind them, and most of the well-known brands are excellent.
There are two basic types – the rotating head one, and there's the sort of oscillating one.
However their role is to remove plaque - you can remove plaque with a manual toothbrush. And when you remove plaque, the aim is to clean your teeth and not to overdo it or under do it.
So you can - there is nothing to say you have to use a manual or an electric toothbrush, but electric toothbrushes make life a little bit easier and they are designed in a way that will make it easier for you to achieve your goal.
