What are sealants?: Dr Ian Kelly, Dentist
Fissure sealants are placed to protect the tooth. Typically we would be sealing teeth as soon as they erupt into the mouth - that would be the biting surface or the occlusal surface. So that would be done about the age of 6 to start with, when the first molar teeth come through.
Quite simply, it places a protective barrier, or veneer, on the surface of the tooth, which is likely to reduce decay risk by fifty percent.
