Oral hygiene and prevention of tooth decay and gum disease, is all about the debridement or removal of plaque from around your teeth.
Whilst tooth brushing will clean the so-called smooth surfaces of your teeth, only flossing typically will clean between the teeth - although recently the use of TePe brushes, the little bottle brushes, does very much the same thing.
