How private cervical screening works
Private cervical screening, also known as a smear test, is available through our Targeted Cancer Screening service, if it's appropriate for you.
Targeted Cancer Screening is designed for people without symptoms who want reassurance. It’s a pay-as-you-go service, so you don’t need Bupa health insurance to book.
Most changes in your cervix aren’t cancer, but it’s always best to check. Finding cancer early makes treatment easier and more effective.
What to expect at a Targeted Cancer Screening for cervical cancer
Appointment overview

Before your appointment, we’ll send you a questionnaire to complete. During your 30-minute appointment, a GP will talk through your answers and discuss any questions or concerns about cervical screening. If screening is appropriate for you, the GP will carry this out. They may also recommend other screening tests based on your age, medical history and individual needs.
Cervical cancer screening tests
Your appointment includes cervical screening if it's appropriate for you based on your age and medical history. Depending on what's clinically relevant to you, it may also include other cancer screening checks, at no extra cost.
Cervical examination
Age 25–64
If it’s medically relevant to you, the GP may carry out a physical cervical examination to check for any unusual changes. They'll explain what they're looking for and answer any questions you may have.
HPV test
Age 25–64
The GP will take a sample from the entrance of your womb to check for human papillomavirus (HPV). If HPV is found, we'll check the sample for abnormal cells. Finding these early means treatment may be possible before they become cancerous.
Other checks that may be included
Because Targeted Cancer Screening is personalised, your GP may also recommend a breast exam. This is included in the price of your appointment.
Breast exam
Age 18+
If it's medically relevant to you, the GP may physically examine your breasts for any unusual changes. They'll also show you how to check your breasts at home and what to look out for.
After your appointment
After your appointment, we'll share your results and let you know if any follow-up is recommended. If your examination or test results show that further investigation may be helpful, the GP can arrange a private referral. Or, with your consent, they can write to your NHS GP recommending an NHS referral.

Is a cancer screening for me?
Our cancer screenings are for those without symptoms who are worried they may be at risk. If you’ve noticed anything unusual, see your GP or book a private GP appointment instead.
You should book a cancer screening if you:
- Are over the age of 18
- Have no current symptoms, but would like peace of mind
- Have a family history of cancer
- Haven't had recent screening
- Want regular check-ups to stay healthy
Book a GP appointment instead if you have:
- A new lump in any area of your body
- Unusual bleeding (pee, vomit, poo or vaginal)
- Unexplained weight loss
- Persistent fatigue or night sweats
- Change in poo (bowel) habits
How accurate are cancer screening tests?
Cancer screening can help identify signs of cancer early, but no test is 100% accurate. Sometimes a screening result may suggest further tests are needed when no cancer is found. In some cases, a screening result can also appear normal when cancer is present.
If you develop any new symptoms after your screening, it's important to speak to a doctor.
Do I need to have Bupa health insurance to get a cancer screening?
No, you do not need Bupa insurance to book a Targeted Cancer Screening. You can book this as a pay-as-you-go service.
This service is only available at our Bupa health centres, so you’ll need to be able to travel there.
I've recently had a cervical screening test. Do I need another one?
If you've recently had cervical screening (a smear test), you may not need another test straight away. If your result was negative, we recommend waiting two years before booking another test.
