Does health insurance cover heart disease?
If you take out health insurance before you have any symptoms or are diagnosed with heart disease, you’re usually covered for treatment.
Covered by most health insurance
- Diagnostic tests – These are tests to find out what condition you may have.
- Consultations – Appointments with your cardiologist or other health professionals.
- The surgery itself – Most insurance will cover treatment in a private hospital.
- Rehabilitation needed – Most insurance will cover you for some care after your surgery.
When you take out your policy, you’ll often have to choose your level of cover. This determines how much cover you receive, including both diagnosis and treatment.
What changes with your level of cover
- Hospital choice
- Outpatient allowances
- Whether diagnostics are included or not
Cover for heart disease with Bupa
With Bupa health insurance, you can get access to our rapid cardiac assessment service. This can be accessed from home for a fast route to diagnosis.
I already have heart disease – will my health insurance cover me?
No. Most health insurance won’t cover conditions you had before your policy started.
If you’ve already been diagnosed with heart disease, a new policy won’t cover this. It also won’t cover any treatment related to those heart issues.
That’s because your heart disease would be a pre-existing condition.
When you take out a new policy, your insurer will ask questions about your health and medical history. They’ll ask about any symptoms or treatment you’ve had.
They’ll then let you know what you will be covered for.
What is heart disease?
Heart disease is a general way to describe any condition that affects your heart and circulation.
These conditions are caused by a gradual build-up of fatty deposits in your artery walls. As blood vessels become narrower, it can make it harder for your heart to do its job.
Sometimes heart disease can be prevented through lifestyle choices. But often, your family history or age means you’re at higher risk of developing it. Many people don’t realise they have heart disease until they’re diagnosed.
Although not easy to spot, there are some early warning signs that you could you have heart disease. Find out more about heart disease.
