Period Plan
A personalised care plan for heavy, painful or irregular periods for those 18 and over. Now available for £250.
You don't need to face period problems alone
Even though a quarter of women in the UK experience menstrual related problems, only 1 in 20 speak to their doctor about heavy periods every year.† We understand the importance of period health, that's why we're here to offer support, and listen, to everyone who experiences periods.
Is the Bupa Period Plan for me?
Our pay-as-you-go plan is for anyone 18 and over with any of these symptoms:
- needing to change a tampon or pad every one to two hours, or emptying your menstrual cup more than recommended
- using more than one product at a time, such as two pads or a pad and tampon
- blood clots around the size of a 10p
- bleeding longer than seven days
- you suffer from psychological symptoms like mood swings and anxiety, and/or physical symptoms like cramps, bloating and headaches associated with your periods
- bleeding through your clothes or bedding
- irregular bleeding – this could be between periods or how frequent they are
- any other concerns around your period
What’s included in a personalised Period Plan?
Health questionnaire
Before your GP appointment, we'll send you an online questionnaire to fill in. It's really important to complete this, as it will help the GP understand your medical history relating to periods.
Spend up to 45 minutes with a GP
With one of our GPs you’ll create a unique care plan for premenstrual syndrome, premenstrual dysphoric disorder, heavy, painful or irregular periods. You’ll get plenty of opportunity to ask questions face to face and talk through next steps.
Physical check and tests
The GP may need a physical examination depending on your symptoms. If needed, they may also need to do some blood tests or other diagnostic tests. The GP will always discuss this with you first and any further costs that may be needed.
Treatment to manage symptoms
If the GP suggests treatment, they can write you a digital prescription. You can arrange delivery or collect from a pharmacy of your choice. You will need to pay for the medication.
Follow-up referrals
If the GP finds any symptoms that need investigating further, they’ll organise a private onward referral or notes for your NHS GP. Private referrals will need to be covered by your insurance or using our pay-as-you-go service
Period advice when you need it, for a full year
Along with a personalised care plan for you to follow, you can also call our nurse-led helpline for 24/7 period and health support.
15-minute follow-up appointment
We’ll check how your plan is going and if your symptoms have eased or you have any concerns. This can be face-to-face or over the phone and if available, it’ll be with the same GP as your first appointment.

Our Period Plan - your questions answered
Try these tips to help ease stomach pains before your appointment. Although it won't completely fix painful, heavy or irregular periods, it may help to manage your symptoms.
Gently massage your tummy or back
Light, circular massages may help to ease spasms in the womb. They can also increase blood flow to the uterus too.
Exercise regularly
Exercising can help relieve symptoms. Raising your legs or laying with bent knees can also help to relieve symptoms if you’re not able to exercise.
Apply warmth
Use a hot water bottle or heat patch against your tummy or back. Make sure these aren’t directly applied to your skin as you may burn yourself.
Try relaxation techniques
A warm bath or shower may help you relax. You can also try practicing yoga.
Wear loose-fitting clothing
If you have period bloating or stomach cramps, tight clothes may feel uncomfortable. Loose fitting clothes can help to ease some discomfort.
It’s useful to track your symptoms or keep a period diary. A period diary helps you to record any changes in your menstrual cycle. If you have any concerns, your GP may be able to notice patterns between your symptoms and menstrual cycle.
