Leeds Utd reaching the Premier League may be the best news to come out of lockdown for many locals, including at least 20 residents at Sunnyview Bupa Care Home.

News of the Championship League title win was met by jubilation at the care home, as many residents have been avid fans for years and even attend games, with Sunnyview being just half a mile away from the Elland Road stadium.

As the victorious team lifted the trophy, residents at Sunnyview were lifting a glass of fizz to mark the momentous occasion, while reminiscing about past games and playing the sport in their youth.

The Bupa care home made it possible for residents to attend matches before lockdown, as part of Bupa’s #NeverTooLate campaign. This initiative is designed to make residents’ dreams and wishes come true and ensure they’re still able to live life to the fullest. For many at Sunnyview, living their best life involves football and seeing Leeds United promoted to the Premier League is a dream come true.

Commenting on the celebrations, Sunnyview Bupa Care Home resident, Peter said: “I have been a Leeds United fan all my life. Growing up, I lived near to the stadium and could hear the cheers every weekend from my garden, now I hear them from my room at Sunnyview which takes me back to my younger days. The Bupa staff here knew what a huge fan I was, so decorated my room in the Leeds United colours. I also have my scarf and a flag here as a tribute to the club and couldn’t be happier about the result.”

Marjorie, also a resident at Sunnyview, adds: “The promotion is wonderful news that has really lifted the spirits of everyone here. My husband is all about Leeds, he loves the club and we've always watch the matches together, often popping into the Peacock pub for a pre-game pint – it’d be nice to do that again.”

Victoria Darlow, Home Manager, concludes: “Both residents and staff here at Sunnyview Bupa Care Home have been ecstatic since hearing the news. It’s been a tough time for everyone during the lockdown, where we have taken extra precautions to keep everyone safe. To have some good news has been such a blessing.

“It’s been great to crack open the bubbly and celebrate the promotion together which we’ve really enjoyed. Now we’re hoping for plenty more celebrations in the coming season.”

Sunnyview Bupa Care Home is situated in the heart of Leeds and welcomes residents in need of nursing or residential care, as well as those living with dementia. For further information, please visit https://www.bupa.co.uk/care-services/care-homes/sunnyview-house-leeds
