What is health insurance?

Health insurance, often called private medical insurance, is an insurance policy that covers the costs of private healthcare, from diagnosis to treatment. You will pay a monthly subscription that covers all or some of the cost of treatment for acute conditions that develop after your health insurance policy has begun.

You may take out private health insurance because it gives you quick access to medical treatment. We offer different levels of private health insurance cover for you to compare: Comprehensive and Treatment and Care.

Health insurance typically covers the cost of treatment for acute conditions that occur after your policy has begun, but there can be exclusions. Pre-existing conditions and cosmetic surgery are often excluded from your health insurance policy, so you won’t be covered for these.

The cost of your private health insurance will depend on the type of policy you choose. You will pay a monthly subscription for your insurance that covers all or some of the costs of your treatment. Alongside our health insurance, we offer a health cash plan, which allows you to spread the cost of some of your everyday health expenses for a regular, monthly premium.

Several factors influence the cost of your health insurance. To be fair to everyone, age is one of the things we use to calculate the cost of your policy. Unhealthy lifestyle choices, like smoking for example, may also increase your monthly premium. So if you choose to stop smoking, it’s important to tell us, as this may reduce the cost of your cover.

We will work closely with you to ensure the cost of health insurance is fair and provide you with value for money.

Firstly, you’ll need to decide what health insurance cover is right for your health and wellbeing needs. We offer two levels of private health insurance cover: Treatment and Care and Comprehensive.

Once you’ve decided which health insurance cover is right for you, it’s easy to get a quote online. You’ll fill out a few personal details and some lifestyle questions, which helps us work out the cost of your health insurance policy.

An excess is the amount you’ll have to pay when you make a claim on your health insurance policy. The excess you choose can have a big impact on your policy, especially when it comes to deciding the cost of your cover, so it’s important to understand how it will impact your health insurance.

Pre-existing conditions, and related ailments, are often excluded from your policy because health insurance is designed to treat new conditions that occur after your cover has started. When you take out health insurance cover with us, we’ll normally ask you to fill out a medical history form to help us confirm what your policy will and won’t cover for you.

Direct Access telephone services are available as long as the symptoms are covered under the policy. If your cover excludes conditions you had before your policy started, we’ll ask you to provide evidence from your GP that your symptoms are not pre-existing for a period of up to two years from policy start date (or five years in the case of mental health) before we can refer you to a consultant or therapist through the Direct Access service. For rolling moratorium underwritten members we will ask for evidence each time you claim for a condition not claimed for before. Always call us first to check your eligibility.

  • 1. In addition to these terms and conditions, the terms set out in Bupa’s Bupa By You Policy Benefits and Terms guide and your membership certificate will apply to your policy.

  • 2. This offer is available to UK residents aged 18 and over who purchase a new consumer Bupa By You health insurance policy either:

    a. directly from Bupa
    b. from Bupa through an intermediary

  • 3. The offer is not available on any other Bupa products or services. The offer is not available to customers switching from a Bupa company health insurance policy, switching from another provider’s health insurance scheme or for existing members transferring from a different health insurance policy, unless the customer is re-underwritten onto a new Bupa By You policy.

  • 4. This offer is available for new Bupa By You health insurance policies for which a quote is provided between 2 November 2020 to 30 November 2020 on a full medical underwriting or moratorium basis. Quotes are valid for 14 days and your policy start date must be on or before 30 November 2020 inclusive.

  • 5. The one month free cover will be applied to month one of the first year of your new Bupa By You policy. If you pay for the first year of subscriptions upfront, you will be charged for 11 months’ subscriptions. This offer is available for the first year only and will not apply in any subsequent years. The premium after the first year will be based on 12 months of cover.
